Kind of interesting to now look back at Steve Jobs's introductory speech (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmG9jzCHtSQ) for Chiat/Day's 'Think Different' campaign, about core values and Apple's approach to marketing.

How can this get negative votes? In fact, how do a lot of perfectly benign threads get negative votes? Are there just members out there who vote negative on everything?

The negative for me is the tiny caveat at the bottom of the article. Apple releasing 8-core Mac Pros this month? Highly doubtful, in my opinion.

Also, negative sometimes just means you don't believe it (as in this case) not that it's a "negative" announcement.

I think there already are online download rental sites, presumably for WMP a la Windows.

Rental makes more sense if the quality is comparable to the current shows they offer. Plus if you buy a movie, with the restrictions the way they are, you most likely won't be able to burn it to a DVD to watch on the plasmas everyone seems to be getting.

And if this truly is a service for some sort of iPod, then they won't be offering HD movies unless of course by some miracle they have an HD screen in the iPod (although HD at any conceivably sized iPod screen would be a waste).

I actually would like a subscription service for both movies and TV shows. I have spent way more than I care to think about on TV series, and honestly I can only watch them but so many times. What do I do with them now? I "own" them, but as we all know, I can't sell them. I just have them forever.

I decided I don't need to right now so it's back to bigadv units now.

Your PPD has improved a lot

Still no new Mac Pro announced...

On another note, I updated four computer to 10.6.3 that were running a3 and all of them resumed and finished. Can't wait for a3 bigadv.

Also rumors are all over the place for PPD on the new Nvidia GTX 480. Soem say 13k PPD, some say 29k...

So, how long till it comes to laptops? :D

And on top of that, its only going to be a viewer, right? I mean have they created any Blu-ray burners, yet?

I really don't want to buy a Macbook Pro until it has Merom, 802.11n, and blue-ray, cause I know those are all going to be standard in less than a year and I can't afford to have a crippled laptop for 3 yrs.

Hopefully it won't be too far, I've saved enough cash.

ur goin' to be waitin' a while... just get one now.

    http://news.com.com/Intel+completes+design+of+Penryn+chip/2100-1006_3-6139487.html

But, since Intel has stated that two dual-core dies in a package is the right way to do quad-core at 65nm, which implies that 45 nm is the right way to do quad-core per die, and two quad-cord dies in a package at 45 nm is the right way to do octo-core at 45nm - obviously we'll have a PowerBook G5 next Tuesday.

Whatever. Apple's pushed Universal apps because they are totally ready to die shrink IBM plants to .65nm and that can only mean one thing.. Power5 POWERBooks. Yes, that's "POWERBooks" not "PowerBooks".

    BooYaa.

It's the master plan.. we move to a new architecture every 18 months. Apple's totally working on their own MIPS chip since the ISA went open a while back. The Developer copies of XCode now cross compile for 5 architectures but I'd have to kill you if I listed all the Instruction sets currently supported. The new build of Stuffit Expander 11 UNIVERSAL is now 427 MB. ROCK ON Obese-Binaries.

For $299 I will guess you would get a dvd, and a download streaming device for iTV. But if you need a mac mini then you would have two dvd players. I hope there is an upgrade for some computer functions such as websurfing and word processing.

Comcast has video on demand and there is no additional hardware. This services is supposed to expand.

I dont see a surround sound audio amp for $299. Perhaps a dock for your iPod, or the iPod is the harddrive.

Im really curious where this iTV might be going?

Hmm... the problem with that line-up is that when consumers see the shiny new advert saying "Meet the new iMacs" they'll look at the clock speeds and say "What new iMacs?". I think it would be reasonable for Apple to offer...

    17" iMac - $1,199 - 2 GHz, X1650 Pro 128 MB
    20" iMac - $1,699 - 2.16 GHz, X1650 Pro 256 MB
    23" iMac - $2,199 - 2.33 GHz, X1650 Pro 256 MB

No way would I pay an extra $500 for an 8% faster machine and a slighly larger display, when for that money I can go with the 20" and buy a second widescreen 20" display and have a HUGE viewable area.

The 23" is going to have to be a LOT closer to the 20" in order for it to sell. I'm thinking $1899 or $1999, or else it will have to be decked out with extra RAM, HD space, or CPU speed.

Chinese naval vessel in the Med,to apparently to extract Chinese workers from Libya (I thought they got them all out before the western nations)?

This is interesting, more for what it represents.

The Chinese have naval vessels available, around the World?

Some American's might be somewhat surprised at this revelation.

It is amazing how limited in vision some people are...

Seriously people stuck with this idea that the future of gaming is going to be non-portable systems with game controllers forever are going to be very disappointed in the future.

Ultimately gesture based movements and other mechanisms will be used for gaming, not a freaking glorified joystick. It is silly to believe otherwise.

Again people saying you couldn't play with a touchscreen device without looking at it have no imagination or understanding. Definately within two years you will be shown to be horribly wrong on this point.

You keep believing the future of gaming is going to remain in the hands of traditional 8 year console development cycles... It is not going to happen.

It would be like saying you can't play any real game on a console, you need a pc for it. I certainly can do much more in terms of controlling and playing a game on a computer than I can do with any console controller.

You really are deluded aren't you? You need to be REALISTIC about your expectations. You want to have a bet in this?

I'm calling BS right now - there will always be a place for pads/sticks/mouse/keyboard it gives a vastly better tactile experience than a touchscreen. Touch gaming will improve, I will agree, but the majority of core gamers won't be playing core games on the device.

Are you a gamer? Any gamer worth their salt is very much aware that the norm was a new gen every 5 years, not 8. But yeah, I'dsay we are probably looking at a 6/7 year cycle right now.

Anyhoo, I digress. I'm still calling BS. yeah, I'm sure mobile gaming will improve, but it' not going to replace consoles or PC's for core gamers.

I assume that's what you meant. Because we've seen touchscreen devices advance by leaps and bounds since June 2007. In two years' time it will very likely be an entirely new ballgame with such devices being a dominant force in tech, including gaming.

This little demo is just barely scratching the surface.

Really? Dominant as in more units out there or where it's a lead platform for development?

I mean, you could say that android has the mobile touch screen market zipped up, but we both know that's because there's so many different handset out there.... Yeah there will be a load out there, but it will never be the main cash cow for games developers - the money is in consoles and to a much lesser extent now, PC gaming.

You're sure about that? Considering the next Xbox isn't due for release till about 2015, and the PS4 probably later, and I'm pretty sure those systems will ship with controllers. The Kinect being an optional extra.

And I seriously doubt the iPad will could be seen as a serious competitor to Games Consoles and PC gaming, in the same way my calculator is a competitor to my iPhone because it performs a same function, better than my iPhone does.

you think? I suspect we'll see an announcement next year and a release in 2013 actually for the 360, the PS4 will probably be 2015. The 'WIIHD" or whatever it' called might be announced this year.........

I agree, I want an iMac like computer with the aluminum housing; looks better on my desk! ;)

At any rate, hopefully the form factor will be thinner. I can see the 17" eventually being relegated to eMac status.

Let's hope that those specs aren't the final ones. That they're just to clear inventory.

I'm hoping for Merom based mac minis.. Merom costs the same so why not ?LIMITED SUPPLY of Merom for the first few months. mini will be the last to get C2D probably in November. But you've gotta give kudos to Apple for adopting the Merom Spec Yonahs into the mini right away. This way the switch to Merom in mini can be almost silent with no disruption to the flow of minis to the market.

Well, they don't necessarily need to field troops that shoot rifles. Having a ground force can mean a lot of different things, including spec ops. I think one feasible solution may be to have US troops field artillery. This might be one of those opportunites to test "smart artillery" on those trenches near civilians and hospitals. They might also try to blow up more tanks so they can sell them more refurbished M1 Abrams later. I think smart artillery is more economical than aerial bombing runs to blow up some cheap russian tanks.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M982_Excalibur

That would be one option. I've said all along that the amount of firepower available to NATO forces is overkill! They are fighting an outdated force which has suffered massive desertion. I've seen these smart shells before, they are very good.

Special Ops are already on the ground, although not officially of course! According to anonymous sources UKSF have been on the ground since well before the airstrikes began, I'm sure the US is the same. I don't really count special forces as having troops on the ground, they are quite different. The UK also has 800 Royal Marines (sort of half way between US Marines and Navy SEALS) on short notice to deploy in the case of a humanitarian crisis.

Apple is paying the price for the crap it did early on and still is doing with no clear rules on what is approved and disapproved.
    Inconsistently rejecting apps.

Apple should never of gotten in the screening business and now they are trying to back out.

I only talked to the guy for about one minute and was told that Apple was looking into this so I am guessing that more than 10 people have an issue.

They look into everything for all new products, standard practice. That's why they encourage folks to return 'bad' units those first few weeks. They call it Early Field Failure Analysis

That's not clever at all. You'd still be stuck with the Intel GPU on the internal screen.

Not if they redesign the Macbooks so the video signal goes back the other way down the thunderbolt cable and directly to the display.

    Although using a 2GB HD 6970 on a 1280x800 display is a bit silly.
